The boulderer… A rare species of human that survives purely on its ability to perform a delicate dance between life and death in perfect synergy with granite. Lacking the ability to bathe and engage in non-climbing social settings, the climber is often left with nothing but chalky hands and a deeply ingrained quest to find the purest rocks, while simultaneously searching for a mate on this grey and white planet. This is… Granite Earth.

So they are really old now, in many aspecst, including the old-school way of filming.
Despite that, two of them are still the hardest routes of Adam´s home climbing area and of the whole Czech Republic. And it would be amazing, if somebody would finally try them… :-)

More about The Wizard´s Apprentice here: WWW.ADAMONDRAFILM.COM/EN

This video consists of following routes:
Xaxid Hostel 9a/+ - Mišja Peč / Osp / Slovenia
Tanec Kuřátek 9a - Jáchymka cave / Moravia Carst / Czech republic
Perlorodka 9a+ - Lidomorna sector / Holštejn crag / Moravian Cars / Czech Republic

Well, old stuff goes through this video away to create space for for somethig new, hopefully much better. But what?

We are currently working on a new and much more challenging film with Adam Ondra called Change. Still a lot of work and traveling ahead of us, but you can already take a look at many photos, videos and texts on the new web-page about the movie.

I wish I could say I got into the finals but unfortunately this is not the case. I’m as happy as if I had though.

I started off the day well; coffee, bacon and eggs, a ride on my bike and even packed my power snacks (gotta have that tuna!). I got a lift with SpiderMonkey and we met the team there. The energy was great, there were a heap of spectators and lots of competitors. It was awesome to be around so many climbers. The qualifying round went for 3 hours and started in a bit of a frenzy. You had to climb as many or as little problems as you liked in the time allowed. Each climb was graded by a points system ranging from about 15 to 75. Your 6 best climbs would be totaled and that was your qualifying score. Flashes gave you a bonus 10 points for that particular climb. I was climbing hard rather than climbing strategically which turned out to be my downfall. I only climbed 40 - 45 point climbs (except for at the end when I stressed out!) whereas most of the girls were climbing at the lower end; mostly 25s and 30s but of course they would get the bonus flash points. I didn’t even think about this, I was too nervous and excited. I missed out on finals by 5 points! Considering the fact I was just trying to climb at my limit, I think I did pretty well. That is why I don’t feel negatively about my performance.

The women who placed were very strong .. except the third place girl; I know I could have placed in her position. First and second place deserved their places, they were two very strong ladies.

I’m very happy I planned ahead and bought some raffle tickets, I won chalk, a chalk bag, a thermos, and a water bottle. Satisfied.

I managed to convince Lopper to compete in the junior division a couple of days prior to the competition. I’m so glad he did because he placed second. He would have won but the kid who took out first place was this amazing 15 year old climber from France who has been climbing since he was 8 years old. He practically flashed every problem. He is inspiring to watch.

It was a fantastic day of climbing. A highlight for me was meeting a local climbing celebrity. He’s a man who is the same height as me (about 5 foot) and he has been travelling solely to climb for the past year or so. He’s currently projecting a route he bolted in China which he thinks is about a hard 32/33. He is so inspiring to me because his height is not a disadvantage and he made me feel better about the fact that short climbers generally climb harder outdoors because we can create out own intermediate holds, which is especially helpful for foot placement. I found every problem in the competition “reachy” as did he. I never ever say a climb is “reachy” so this was really saying something. Gym climbing can be like that though so I don’t mind, outdoors is what rock climbing is really about.

All in all it was a great day. I even met someone who I think I may be crushing on. This is dangerous territory in such a small climbing community. Definitely playing it safe.

SpiderMonkey seemed to be just about the only person who left the competition in a bad mood. He did not make the finals, so the rest of the time he was basically sulking. On the way home he explained he was extremely disappointed because, in his opinion, he always climbs harder than the 2 boys from our “team” who managed to make it to the finals round. I thought this was a very self-absorbed thing to say. He didn’t even seem happy for his friends. I was so proud of everyone’s efforts, it was hard to see how he could place himself so high above everyone else. It was pretty pathetic to see a grown man sulking about a competition. He placed such high expectations on himself and burnt himself out way too early. Instead of taking the good from the experience he focused on the negative.

Anyway.. That’s enough about the competition. I’ll post again this week. Hopefully about something eventful!
